Specialised Geotechnical and Rheology Laboratory

Physical characterisation and rheological behaviour testing of materials, providing the scientific basis for engineering designs and numerical models.

Our Approach

We have a specialised laboratory designed to generate the critical primary data that feeds our projects and field investigations. Through high-precision physical, mechanical and rheological characterisation tests on tailings, slurries and soil–water mixtures at different concentrations, we determine the true properties of materials, ensuring that every numerical model and structural design is backed by rigorous scientific evidence.

Areas of Work

  • Automated rotational rheometry using Anton Paar equipment for the accurate estimation of the yield stress and viscosity of tailings and slurries at different solids concentrations.
  • Flume tests (McPhail flume) carried out to determine Manning’s roughness coefficient and accurately analyse the flow behaviour of the material.
  • Scaled rheological box tests used to calibrate flow parameters, assess behaviour under different consolidation conditions and simulate operational scenarios such as sand interbedding, barriers and overtopping.
  • Calibration of Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) models: integration of the physical results obtained in the laboratory with Flow3D software to optimise the accuracy of transport simulations, material rheology and dam breach analysis.
  • Advanced geotechnical characterisation of samples obtained from boreholes and test pits through triaxial tests (UU, CU, CD), direct shear, one-dimensional consolidation and flexible-wall permeability to determine the critical strength, deformability and hydraulic conductivity parameters of the ground.
