Tailings Governance

Strategic alignment, expert oversight and compliance with international standards to guarantee the stability and safe continuity of tailings storage facilities.

Our Approach

We provide a specialist consultancy service in corporate tailings governance, focused on mitigating the critical risks associated with the management of storage facilities. We support mining operations in implementing global governance frameworks, ensuring that the management of their assets is not only technically robust but also strictly complies with prevailing international guidelines on sustainability, safety and institutional accountability.

Specialised Consulting Services

Alignment and Compliance with the GISTM Standard

Implementation of the Global Industry Standard on Tailings Management (GISTM), focused on carrying out gap analyses, developing integrated management systems and meeting the standard’s technical and socio-environmental requirements in order to achieve the goal of zero harm to people and the environment.

Engineer of Record (EoR) Service

We have highly qualified senior professionals who actively act as Engineer of Record (EoR), supported by the strategic role of the Deputy Engineer of Record (Deputy EoR) and a specialised technical support team. Our service covers technical assurance of the design concept, construction reviews after each raise and the continuous analysis of the facility’s physical performance. We act as the firm’s direct representative to ensure that the facility is built and operated in strict accordance with the original design intent, issuing the critical guidance and recommendations needed to maintain the safe performance of the civil and geotechnical structure.

  • We perform key roles of maximum technical responsibility in high-scale, complex international assets such as Rössing Uranium, Argyle, Husab, Hemco, and Winu, delivering a proven standard of technical assurance aligned with international standards.

Participation in the Independent Tailings Review Board (ITRB)

Our senior leadership includes a suitably qualified professional to sit on the Independent Tailings Review Board (ITRB), which enables us to offer external expert review services on highly complex projects. In this role of the highest technical standing, we carry out independent audits aimed at strategically assessing the risk, safety and environmental impact of storage facilities. The scope of the service comprises the critical evaluation, and the issue of findings reports, of key structural documentation — from design basis reports and annual performance reports to construction records for each raise — ensuring the highest standard of corporate assurance to boards and investors.

  • Our leadership team has solid experience serving on review boards at world-class operations such as Paraburdoo and Tom Price (Rio Tinto), Worsley (South32), as well as Centinela and Los Pelambres (Antofagasta Minerals).

Applied Technology and Software Engineering

Through our specialised Software Engineering division, we combine advanced geotechnical knowledge with programming and automation solutions to redefine traditional consulting. Out of this synergy we have developed TOMS (Tailings & Water Operations Management System), a scalable and adaptable digital platform designed to centralise data and optimise the comprehensive management of the storage facilities at your mining operation:
  • Operational Data Centralisation: A module designed to unify and continuously process all geomatic, geotechnical and operational information of the facility on a single platform, optimising analysis times and improving overall management efficiency.
  • Inspection Planning and Recording: A system for scheduling and structured recording of field inspections, enabling immediate follow-up of operational observations so that substandard conditions in the infrastructure are identified in good time.
  • Integrated Early Warning System: An advanced notification and alert mechanism for any deviation or anomaly detected, making it possible to anticipate risks, identify potential seepage and minimise environmental impact.
  • Regulatory Compliance and Document Repository: A centralised space for managing the tailings deposition plan and document traceability, structured to ensure that the operation sustainably complies with international safety regulations.
  • Incident Management and Response Plans (ERP): A centralised module for reporting, controlling and tracing unexpected events, which integrates the Emergency Response Plan, ensuring a coordinated response to contingencies.

International Institutional Backing

Active Membership of ANCOLD (The Australian National Committee on Large Dams)

We are institutional members of one of the most prestigious organisations in dam management and safety worldwide. This international affiliation reflects our commitment to the strictest global guidelines and allows us to bring the best practices, innovations and design and construction standards for large dams directly into each of our mining and water projects.
